Walk the site after ordinary rain and again after a heavier storm, noting standing water and its route across the property. Ask about seasonal flooding that a dry-weather visit would miss. Examine the soil profile with appropriate local assistance if a restrictive layer is suspected. Record these observations before choosing improvements, because a planting hole cannot by itself solve a site-wide drainage problem.
