Lemon Zest

Lemon Zest is a modern Florida mango selected through the breeding program of Gary Zill of Zill High Performance Plants in Boynton Beach, Florida. Originally identified by the selection number 27-1, Lemon Zest originated as a seedling of the Myanmar mango Po Pyu Kalay, better known in the United States as Lemon Meringue. The relationship is readily apparent in the fruit's strong citrus character, but Lemon Zest produces a noticeably larger fruit than its parent. The cultivar emerged from Zill's extensive effort to develop mangoes with more intense and interesting aromas and flavors, particularly characteristics associated with Southeast Asian and Indian mangoes. Contemporary grower discussions show 27-1 appearing before its commercial release, with Lemon Zest entering wider circulation around 2011.

The fruit is generally medium to large, approximately 14–16 ounces, and oval-oblong with an obtuse apex. Its skin becomes predominantly yellow when ripe, surrounding yellow, completely Fiberless flesh. Flavor is Lemon Zest's defining characteristic. Gary Zill and fellow horticultural specialists describe it as rich and sweet with lemon and orange-citrus notes, while other Florida descriptions emphasize candied orange and tangelo characteristics. The 2025 Zill/UF presentation recorded soluble-solids readings of approximately 12.3–15.9° Brix . Growers have likewise documented a recognizable citrus aroma and smooth, creamy eating texture, helping Lemon Zest become one of the better-known examples of the modern Florida citrus-flavored mango group.

The tree begins relatively slowly but can develop into a vigorous, upright grower with a dense canopy. Its major drawback is disease performance in humid South Florida. Current horticultural documentation describes Lemon Zest as resistant to Anthracnose but susceptible to Bacterial Black Spot and powdery mildew, and Florida growers have reported these problems reducing reliable production. The fruit generally ripens during the middle to later portion of Florida's mango season. Despite those horticultural shortcomings, Lemon Zest remains important to collectors because it combines Po Pyu Kalay ancestry with the work of one of Florida's most influential modern mango breeders and an unusually recognizable citrus-driven eating quality.
