Injury can change the surface, color, and apparent shape of the part you are trying to describe. Photograph damage separately and choose unaffected tissue for cultivar comparisons when available. Ask for a pest diagnosis if unfamiliar marks dominate the sample. Do not turn scarring, distorted shoots, or insect deposits into defining cultivar traits merely because they recur on a tree with an unresolved pest problem.
