Assess the planting level promptly instead of repeatedly adding mulch to hide the depression. A low root ball can leave soil against the trunk and collect runoff around the tree. A recently planted small tree may need careful lifting and resetting with support beneath the ball. Seek help before moving an established tree, because pulling it upward can tear roots that have already grown outward.
