Mango FAQ

1 FAQ

Growing & Tree CareWhat is formative pruning supposed to accomplish on a young mango?

Train a young mango with small, selective cuts that encourage well-spaced lateral branches rather than one tall, narrow trunk. Let new growth harden before deciding which shoots to keep, and avoid removing so much healthy foliage that establishment is slowed. Remove damaged or crossing growth where necessary and keep shoots from below the graft separate from the intended canopy. Timing should leave replacement shoots time to mature before the local flowering season.

The goal is a useful arrangement of durable branches, not simply a shorter tree. Select growth that distributes the future canopy around the trunk and leaves room for branches to develop without crowding. Small early decisions can prevent difficult large cuts later. Judge success by branch placement, access, and balance rather than by making every young tree look identical.
