A dense upper canopy or neighboring tree can leave lower branches with insufficient light to remain productive. Compare the affected area with the illuminated outer canopy before assuming a whole-tree decline. Selective opening of the top may help preserve lower growth, but dead branches will not become leafy simply because they are exposed. Plan future pruning to maintain light distribution rather than relying on a single drastic correction.
