Topworking replaces the fruiting variety by grafting selected new growth onto an established tree. It may be an option when the existing root system and trunk are sound but the current variety no longer suits the grower's aims. It does not repair decay, instability, or a failing root system. Have an experienced grafter assess the tree and plan canopy renewal, protection of exposed wood, and subsequent training.
