A grass-free area reduces competition close to a young tree and makes it easier to avoid mower and trimmer injury. It also keeps the trunk base visible for inspection. Expand maintenance practices as the canopy develops instead of mowing tightly against the bark. Mulch can cover the cleared surface, but leave a gap at the trunk rather than building a mound against it.
