The trunk base needs to remain visible and free from a persistent pile of damp organic material. UF/IFAS recommends leaving mulch 8 to 12 inches from the trunk in home landscapes. Pull material back gently without scraping bark or cutting roots, and inspect for hidden wounds or restrictive ties. Check again after rain, mowing, or fresh applications because mulch can gradually move inward.
