Avoid turning the planting hole into an isolated pocket of highly amended material. UF/IFAS home-landscape guidance does not require fertilizer or compost in the hole, and recommendations from other regions can differ. Let soil testing and local practice guide any justified amendment. A sound establishment plan considers the surrounding root environment, because roots must eventually grow beyond the original planting space.
