Nursery medium and native soil can wet and dry differently, especially early after planting. Water may reach one zone more effectively than the other. Check each separately rather than judging from the surrounding ground alone, and direct irrigation where the living roots currently are. As roots spread, reassess the pattern so attention does not remain confined forever to the original pot-sized area.
