Choose representative soil and irrigation conditions rather than the most convenient place beside a road. Monitor more than one depth to distinguish replenishment of the main root zone from water moving beneath it. Separate substantially different management zones where possible. Record sensor position relative to emitters and trees, because a reading loses meaning if it reflects an unusually wet outlet edge or an unrepresentative dry gap.
