Check whether healthy lateral buds remain and whether the damage extends into the stem. Mango propagation can use buds other than the terminal, but the selected method must provide an intact bud and sound joining tissue. Do not conceal damage under the wrapping and expect it to disappear. If the stick is scarce, have an experienced propagator assess whether a suitable bud section can be salvaged without using compromised wood.
