The pieces need close contact along the intended joining surfaces, not merely contact between the wedge tip and the bottom of the split. Check cut lengths and fit before binding. Remake an unsuitable cut in sound tissue if enough material remains, rather than forcing the scion down or using tape to hide a gap. A trial fit on spare material helps reveal this geometry before valuable scionwood is prepared.
