Sorting helps match scion and stock dimensions to the grafting method before fresh surfaces are exposed. Keep health and usable stem condition in the selection criteria; thickness alone is not readiness. Prepare a small working group rather than decapitating an entire bench in advance. This makes fitting more predictable and reduces the temptation to use an awkward match merely because a rootstock has already been cut.
