A newly expanding leafy tip is delicate material to cut, bind, and keep hydrated after detachment. Do not confuse softwood grafting on an actively growing rootstock with a requirement to collect the softest possible scion. Follow a method that specifies the condition of both components. If the available tips are unsuitable, waiting for better material can be more useful than repeatedly grafting whatever the tree currently offers.
