Remove leaf blades carefully without cutting away the buds at their bases. Where your grafting method retains short leaf stalks, leave them without using them as handles that can tear the bark. Inspect each prepared stick before wrapping it. Working slowly at this stage prevents avoidable bud damage that could later look like a failure of the rootstock, grafting tape, or seasonal timing.
