Inspect the entire batch before preparing any grafts, separating firm, sound sticks from visibly deteriorated material. Photograph arrival condition and retain the source and shipping information. Do not hide doubtful wood among good material just to complete the planned number of plants. If a trial is worthwhile, label it separately so its outcome does not distort your assessment of an otherwise sound grafting method.
