Winter grafting is more difficult to evaluate when rootstocks are barely growing. A protected nursery may provide favorable conditions, but protection must be managed rather than assumed from the presence of a roof. Check plant activity and the actual bench environment before using valuable wood. For a backyard grower without controlled conditions, waiting for a stronger growth period may offer a more practical opportunity.
