A cleft graft fits a wedge-shaped scion base into a split made in the prepared stock. It is useful when the pieces can be held firmly with living edges in contact. The split must accommodate the wedge without forcing it through a ragged opening. Practice the fit on spare material first; a recognizable wedge shape alone does not establish that the contact surfaces meet properly.
