Bind firmly enough to hold the pieces aligned and close gaps without crushing the stem. Watch the scion as the tape is tensioned, because it can shift out of position. The binding should stabilize a good fit rather than force poorly matched surfaces together. Include later inspection in the plan, since material that was appropriate on grafting day can become restrictive as the stem enlarges.
