Grafting & PropagationWhen should the rootstock top be removed after a side graft?

Follow the sequence for the specific side-grafting method rather than cutting away the stock top immediately by habit. Some procedures retain it while the scion establishes, then reduce it as suitable growth develops. Mark the plant for follow-up so that temporary retention does not become permanent competition. Inspect the scion and union before each step, and avoid transferring a schedule from a different grafting system without checking its purpose.
