Keep the union above the soil and avoid raising the planting level with mulch against the trunk. Before planting, identify the union and the existing root-ball surface instead of using the top of an oversized nursery bag as a guide. After settling and irrigation, inspect the level again. Clear visibility also makes it easier to recognize rootstock sprouts and check whether an old binding was overlooked.
