Select growth that can form a sound, accessible framework rather than retaining every upright shoot. Protect the desired scion growth while removing competing rootstock regrowth as it appears. Keep track of where each graft joins the old structure before the canopy becomes dense. Early selection is easier to inspect and adjust than a crowded tangle that later requires removing large portions of the replacement canopy.
