Length alone does not describe the number of functional bisexual flowers, the condition of the flowers, or their access to pollen. A large cluster may look impressive without being more useful reproductively. When comparing panicles, include flower types, opening stage, and visible injury rather than measuring the stalk alone. This avoids selecting a management treatment merely because it produced longer clusters in photographs.
