Both immature fruit and mature fruit intended for transport can feel hard. Firmness therefore needs supporting evidence from shape, internal development, or an appropriate validated test. Avoid repeatedly squeezing fruit still attached to the tree while searching for a soft specimen. If harvest readiness is uncertain, take a labeled sample and compare its measured characteristics with its subsequent ripening performance.
