Flavor, Quality & StorageHow should I assess whether a whole mango is ready to eat?
Some mangoes remain largely green when ready to eat, while red blush on other mangoes can appear well before ripeness. Judge the whole fruit by gentle yielding, its condition, and the ripening behavior of that variety rather than requiring yellow or red skin. A pleasant aroma can support the decision but does not replace checking for decay. A single soft, damaged spot is not the same as even ripening.
Support the fruit in your palm and apply gentle pressure over a broad area rather than pressing a fingertip into one spot. A ripe mango generally yields somewhat, but the whole fruit should also be inspected for localized collapse or decay. Use the response to plan when to cut it. Repeatedly testing the same spot can create the damage you are trying to detect.
