Examine a fresh leaf from both sides and gently wipe a small affected area with a damp cloth. A removable coating suggests material on the surface, while an embedded lesion remains part of the leaf. Check for sticky deposits and insects nearby, but retain an untouched sample for identification. A wipe test narrows the possibilities; it does not establish the organism responsible or justify a fungicide application.
