Thrips feeding is one possibility when silvered leaf surfaces occur with small dark deposits. Examine both leaf surfaces and collect the insects if possible, because similar discoloration can arise from other injuries. Note whether the newest leaves or older foliage are affected and whether damage is increasing. Confirming active feeding is more useful than treating old silvering, which can persist after the insects have left.
