Look for honeydew-producing insects at the destination of the ant traffic. The ants may be visiting a food source rather than directly chewing the tree. Trace several trails to their endpoints and photograph the associated colonies for identification. Managing ants alone may leave the sap-feeding population in place, while treating every ant as the primary pest can distract from the actual source of sticky deposits.
