Look at which leaves fall and what remains on the tree. A few older leaves dropping while new growth develops is a different pattern from rapid loss of young leaves, widespread spotting, or branch dieback. Collect freshly fallen examples and compare them with attached leaves. Note whether other trees changed at the same time, because a shared environmental event can imitate an outbreak confined to the mango canopy.
