Overhead canopy can modify nighttime exposure, but mango also needs strong sunlight for good growth and fruiting. Evaluate how much shade the larger tree creates across the year and whether the mango would remain crowded as it grows. Occasional cold protection is not a good reason to accept chronic poor light. A position with adequate sun and a separate protection plan may offer a better balance.
