A brief low temperature and a long cold night can impose different demands on both the tree and its protection system. Covers and stored warmth may perform differently when cold persists or is accompanied by wind. Record the whole temperature trace when possible, including the recovery after sunrise. This helps explain why two winters with the same reported minimum can leave very different damage on the same tree.
