An aboveground root ball is exposed differently from roots in the landscape. Protecting only the leaves can leave the container sides and base vulnerable to cold. Move the whole plant to suitable shelter when possible, or include the pot in a carefully planned protection arrangement. Check conditions near the root ball as well as the canopy, especially where the container stands on an exposed deck or cold surface.
