Document the exposure and inspect the plant for broken branches, collapsed foliage, and obvious trunk injury. Allow time for the boundary of cold damage to become clearer before deciding how much living wood remains. Keep the tree protected from another event while monitoring buds and stems. A dramatic appearance immediately afterward does not provide a reliable pruning line or establish whether the grafted portion will recover.
