A small, shallow check beneath the bark can reveal living green tissue or discolored injured tissue at that point. It does not describe the condition of the entire branch or guarantee that buds will resume growth. Use the least damage needed and avoid repeated scraping around the trunk. Combine the observation with the later pattern of bud growth before deciding which wood can safely be removed.
