Increase exposure gradually rather than moving tender nursery foliage directly into the harshest position. Ask the nursery how the tree was grown and whether it has already been hardened for outdoor planting. Watch newly exposed leaves and adjust the transition if injury develops. Sun hardening prepares the tree for a different light environment; it is not a reason to impose severe drought or temperature stress during establishment.
