Choose a container with effective drainage openings and a base that will not block them when placed on its support. Check that liners, pot feet, and decorative outer containers leave a clear route for excess water. Inspect the openings after moving or repotting the tree. A free-draining mix cannot compensate for a container that retains runoff because its outlets are obstructed or submerged.
