Inspect the root ball for dense circling roots and compare its size with the tree above it. Roots visible at one drainage opening alone do not describe the condition of the entire container. Ask the nursery to show representative roots when evaluating a large tree in a small pot. Avoid choosing height over root quality, because a badly confined root system can complicate both continued container care and eventual planting.
