Determine whether the root ball has settled, the mix has broken down, or dry material has pulled away from the container wall. Inspect below the surface before adding a thick new layer. Repeated topping-up can conceal the trunk base without correcting the condition around the roots. If the medium no longer functions well, plan a careful repot rather than treating every reduction in surface level as a shortage of material.
