Use any surface mulch so the trunk base stays visible and clear of persistent contact with damp material. Leave space to inspect the substrate and prevent mulch from obstructing the container's rim or drainage route. Check beneath it when evaluating root-zone conditions instead of judging only the dry-looking surface. Field mulch depths should not be copied automatically into a pot with limited volume and different exposure.
