Mango FAQ

Seeds, Rootstocks & BreedingIs mango polyembryony an inherited trait or a germination treatment?

Polyembryony has a genetic basis; soaking or changing the potting medium does not turn a monoembryonic genotype into a reliably polyembryonic one. Research has identified genetic regulation associated with this trait in mango. Nursery conditions still influence which embryos survive and become visible seedlings. Keep embryo type, observed sprout count, and germination treatment in separate record fields so environmental responses are not mistaken for a change in inheritance.
