Mango FAQ

1 FAQ

Seeds, Rootstocks & BreedingIs a grocery-store mango seed useful for a home growing experiment?

Yes, a fresh, viable mango seed can grow into a tree. Plant it in a warm place in a well-drained medium that stays moist rather than waterlogged, and protect the young plant from cold. Growing from seed is a worthwhile experiment, but the resulting tree may not reproduce the fruit you ate, and flowering can take a long time. Choose a correctly labeled grafted tree when predictable variety identity and earlier cropping matter most.

It can be useful if the enclosed seed is viable, but the experiment begins with uncertain parentage and handling history. Record the fruit label and purchase date, then judge success by healthy establishment rather than an assumed future flavor. A seedling that grows well indoors has not yet demonstrated outdoor adaptation or fruit quality. Keep expectations aligned with the available space and the long evaluation period.
