A large shoot can conceal a poor root system. Root-bound mango nursery plants may establish poorly after planting, so height should not override inspection of root condition. Ask how long the plant has occupied its present container and examine a representative sample from a commercial lot. Buying a smaller, sound plant can be a better decision than accepting a tall tree whose roots have been confined too long.
