Remove plants with serious root defects, persistent decline, or damage that makes a fair assessment impossible. Record the reason so nursery losses are not silently excluded from the performance story. Distinguish an unhealthy plant from a healthy plant that simply grows more slowly. The first may be unusable stock, while the second could still be informative in a properly designed evaluation of genetic differences.
