Identify both components and track establishment, union appearance, tree decline, and survival over time. Photograph suspect unions and retain the history of watering, nutrition, and physical damage before assigning a cause. Successful early growth is only an initial observation, so follow the combination into later development. A compatibility concern is especially important when introducing breeding selections that have little local nursery or orchard history.
