Soil depth, drainage, wind exposure, and irrigation distribution may change across a site. Putting every candidate at one end and every comparison at the other makes those effects difficult to separate. As a practical trial design, distribute treatments within blocks representing the main site gradients and randomize their positions. Keep a map and record exceptions so a later analyst can understand the comparison actually planted.
