A soil horizon is a layer with characteristics that distinguish it from layers above or below. A soil profile shows that vertical sequence. The surface alone may therefore miss important differences deeper in the future root zone. Use the profile description to organize questions about the site rather than assuming every layer is simply more of the same topsoil.
