Getting StartedWhat do in situ and ex situ mean in discussions of mango conservation?
In situ conservation maintains plants within their original populations and environments; ex situ conservation maintains genetic material outside that setting, such as in a managed collection. A living mango collection can preserve selected material without preserving the original habitat or population processes. These approaches can complement each other, but maintaining a few named trees should not be described as protecting every aspect of wild mango diversity.
