The University of Hawaii selected Exel from open-pollinated Irwin seedlings at Poamoho and first selected it in 1978. Its release sheet describes firm, juicy, fiberless flesh and a thin, flat seed. Irwin is the recorded seed parent, not proof of a known pollen donor. Keep Exel's separate identity when comparing the two cultivars or tracing material offered under its earlier selection designation.
